THE
HENSCHEL LOCOMOTIVES
|
The Henschel locos were built by Thyssen Henschel of Kassel, Germany
under license from GM and entered into service in 1979. All the locos were
painted green. They were not reliable
nor popular and the author is surprised that they still run. We have personal
experience of a loco failing on the Idalgashinna ascent in the late 1970's
whilst pulling the Badulla-Colombo Night Mail Train and loads of anecdotal
evidence. Interestingly the power
plant was made by General Motors (V12 1650 h.p.) |

No 794 (Henschel) ready to depart Kandy. The
rather "cheap" styling is obvious compared to the subtle lines of the EMD
G12The only good thing that could be said about these locos is that the
visibility was better for the engineer....
